Best Practices for Responsible, Mission-Focused Social Media Programs

Kathy Harman-Stokes, CPO, CFTC
Wolf Tombe, CTO, Customs & Border Protection

Social media present new opportunities for the Federal government to provide open government, facilitate inter-government collaboration, interact with and learn from the public and advance agency missions. Yet, the use of social media impacts information technology systems and also implicates many laws, rules and regulations, including electronic discovery rules, FOIA, the Privacy Act, Federal Records Act, procurement rules and ethical rules. In this session, learn about the value of using social media to advance your own mission and build public trust in your organization. Also, learn how to responsibly develop social media tools, minimizing risks to your IT infrastructure and legal risks under the Privacy Act, Records Act and other legal regimes.
